Norman B. Emery, 25, carpenter, attempted to rescue John D. Christensen, 42, concrete contractor, and Gerald Wise, 29, plumber, from suffocation, New Albany, Indiana, August 29, 1932. Emery descended to the platform by placing his feet against the walls of the cesspool and sliding and lowering himself. He realized he was being affected by the gas, and releasing Christensen’s chin, he stood upright and extended one arm upward. A man knelt at the top and grasped Emery’s hand but did not get a firm hold, and Emery sank unconscious on Christensen and Wise, causing them to be submerged. Emery was disabled one day. (See case of GERALD WISE.)
