Norman J. Thomas died after attempting to save four teen-age girls from drowning, Ocean Park, Washington, July 30, 1989. Four 13-year-old girls were in wadable water of the Pacific Ocean when a strong current took them away from shore into water over their heads. They called for help. The grandfather of one of the girls, Thomas, 63, retired truck driver, waded and swam toward them from the beach, as did two others persons. Arriving volunteer firemen shortly rescued the girls and the two other persons. The girls required hospital treatment for mild hypothermia, and they recovered. Thomas was removed from the ocean and was hospitalized, but he died two days later from the effects of the ordeal.
