Norman Westaway Brittain attempted to save Vernon J. Stackable from suffocation, Minto, New Brunswick, July 28, 1932. Roped and wearing a respirator, which was not known to be thoroughly protective against gas, Brittain, 27, civil engineer, descended the cross pieces to the bottom, raised Vernon, 10, and slipped the loop around him. While he handled the rope, he had an odd sinking sensation and was not clearly aware of his own actions or surroundings. Both were pulled to the surface. Brittain, who was unconscious, was revived. Vernon was dead. (See case of MATHIAS WUHR.)
