Olaf A. Young, 29, farmer, saved Evan Jones, 18, and Clyde Jones, 23, from suffocation, Viola, Illinois, April 7, 1907. The two men had been overcome by black damp at the bottom of an old mine air shaft, 25 feet from the surface, and Young made two descents. First he was lowered with a rope, which he tied around one of the men, and was drawn up with him; the second time he descended a ladder, with the rope unattached to himself, and, after tying the rope to the other man, ascended the ladder. 2499-191
