Olen M. Scott 14, schoolboy, saved Ida M. Shipman, 23, from drowning, Weldon, Texas, September 15, 1912. Miss Shipman was swimming across the Trinity River when she became tired and went beneath the surface 40 feet from the bank where the water was over 10 feet deep. She continued her efforts to swim but made no progress. After she had gone down a second time, Olen, who was much smaller than she and had learned to swim about a month before, jumped into the water and swam to her. About the moment he grasped her, she became unconscious, or nearly so, and Olen swam to the bank with her. 9442-772
