Oliver J. Morton, 19, farmer, died attempting to save Katye B. Snelling, 15, and Annie L. Hobbs, 15, from drowning, Richland, Georgia, July 17, 1915. The girls, who could not swim, became distressed 45 feet from the bank of Alston’s Mill pond, where the water was about 10 feet deep. Morton, who had heart trouble and was not feeling well, ran fully dressed into the water and swam to the girls. He was seized and submerged by the girls, as was Katye’s brother, who followed Morton to the scene. Other help in a boat reached the girls, and they were taken ashore. Katye’s brother boarded the boat, but Morton sank and was drowned five or six feet from the boat. 15549-1245
