Orrin Porter, 21, city fireman, helped to save Edward Hadfield, 57, factory inspector, from a well cave-in, Bristol, Connecticut, November 11, 1923. (See case of HAYDN LONG.) Porter was the fireman who entered the well a few minutes after Long had left. He used a small shovel and placed the sand in a bucket that was pulled up with a rope. After working an hour in the well, he was showing signs of exhaustion and was ordered by his chief to come out. On his second trip he worked only a few minutes. 26675-2057
