Oscar Bell, 34, salesman, attempted to save Etelka Scarborough, 40, from burning, Temple, Texas, December 4, 1926. Mrs. Scarborough was ill in bed in her home, and the house took fire. A man attempted to enter a window five feet above the ground but turned back, because of heat and smoke. Bell then entered the window, despite warnings and attempts to restrain him. The room was dense with smoke, flames on the walls and ceiling showed faintly through the smoke, and clothing on the bed was burning. Bell groped his way across the room to the bed, picked up Mrs. Scarborough from the floor, and carried her to the window. Bell sustained no burns, but Mrs. Scarborough’s clothing had been burned from her, and she was dead from burns. 26906-2336
