Otto H. Carroll, 35, mechanic, died attempting to save Leroy W. Lewis, 12, from drowning, Metamora, Indiana, May 31, 1914. Leroy, who could not swim, got into deep water about 40 feet from the bank while wading in the White Water River. He went beneath the surface several times and drifted with the current. In response to cries uttered by a boy with Leroy, Carroll ran 100 feet and, fully dressed, jumped into the water, which was deep close to the bank. He swam 10 feet and then went beneath the surface. He came up, struggling, and swam 15 feet farther with effort, then he went beneath the surface and was drowned. Lewis was drowned about the same time. 13107-1014
