Otto L. Gibson, 45, locomotive fireman, saved Daniel Galvan, 2, from being killed by a train, Omaha, Nebraska, June 14, 1954. At dusk Daniel wandered onto a track on which two diesel locomotives pulling cars were backing, and he stood just inside one rail as the train approached at a speed of 12 m.p.h. The engineer saw Daniel and applied emergency brakes. Gibson left the cab of the head locomotive and descended steps at the side of the platform. Holding to a handrail, he swung himself onto a footboard a foot above the track. As the locomotive moved at diminishing speed to within eight feet of Daniel, Gibson dived to the track-bed ahead of the locomotive. He landed on his side, got hold of Daniel, and rolled with him from the track, barely clearing the locomotive, which stopped 75 feet beyond them. Gibson suffered bruises. 43366-4025
