Otto Reid saved Walter W. Roberts from drowning, Oneida, Kentucky, June 17, 1919. Walter, 8, was being taken across the South Fork of the Kentucky River on the back of another boy, and Walter pushed his companion’s head under water. The boy returned to the bank, leaving Walter in deep water 40 feet from the bank. Otto, 12, schoolboy, swam 90 feet to Walter, grasped him by the hair under the water, and drew him to the surface. Walter struggled and tried to climb upon Otto, causing Otto to go under the surface at least once. Otto could make no progress swimming with Walter, but he supported him for two minutes until two other boys reached them in a boat. Walter was taken to the bank in the boat, and Otto swam to the bank. 19663-1717
