P. Lawrence Imbesi died after rescuing Morris L. Johnson, Jr., from assault, Ocean City, New Jersey, July 15, 1933. After firing a shot into the air when a policeman attempted to arrest him, a man ran through an alley alongside the post office, turned into a driveway at the rear of the building, and stopped. The policeman ran to a street at the other end of the driveway to try to intercept him. As the man stopped, Johnson, 24, rushed out of the post office and threw him down. As both were getting up after rolling over, the man shot Johnson in the right breast and a moment later in the forearm. Johnson let go his hold, and the man at a distance of five feet from him fired another shot, striking Johnson in the back. About that time Imbesi, 26, student, who had followed Johnson out of the post office, threw his arms around the man. Both fell and rolled in a struggle. After a few seconds they became separated. As they were getting to their knees, the man shot Imbesi in the abdomen and then ran toward the street. He was later arrested. Johnson recovered. Imbesi died from his injury the next day.
