Parker Wheeler Fairbank attempted to save Joseph D’Amato from suffocation, New Britain, Connecticut, June 3,1933. Wearing a gas-mask, Fairbank, 43, gas-house foreman, started into the producer but was unable to get through the manhole because of a hose attached to the mask. He got out and removed the mask. He then entered and put on the mask as soon as he was inside. Standing in ashes to his knees, he put the rope around D’Amato, 51, gas-producer operator, with much difficulty. Air failed in the mask, and Fairbank removed the mask and then hooked the rope around D’Amato. After D’Amato was pulled out, Fairbank ascended the ladder, and men reached into the producer and pulled him through the manhole. Fairbank lost consciousness just after being grasped. He revived but was disabled for a week.
