Patricia J. Schieb, 12, schoolgirl, saved Daniel L. Stone, 8, from being struck by an automobile, Sylvania, Ohio, October 31, 1956. At night Daniel, Patricia, and six other children, 5 to 13, were walking beside a paved roadway as an automobile approached from the opposite direction. The automobile, driven by a 14-year-old boy, veered toward the children at a speed of not less than 35 m.p.h., and the right wheels left the pavement. As the other six children ran to safety in a ditch four feet from the edge of the road, Patricia saw that the automobile then was only 15 feet from Daniel, who was by her side. She quickly turned and pushed Daniel into the ditch out of the path of the oncoming vehicle. Immediately thereafter the automobile, traveling at undiminished speed, struck Patricia. She was thrown 15 feet and landed on the ground six feet from the side of the road as the vehicle left the scene. Daniel escaped injury. Patricia suffered a double fracture of a thigh bone from the impact of the automobile, and contusions of the head and body when she struck the ground. After being hospitalized for 16 days and recuperating at home for several months, she recovered. 44009-4108
