Patricia Lucille Shields saved Margaret L. Howard from drowning, Buffalo, New York, February 11, 1940. Margaret, 8, broke through ice on Black Rock Harbor into water 11 feet deep six feet from a high wall at the bank. She held to the ice in a hole seven feet long. Patricia, 9, schoolgirl, who was a poor swimmer, sat on the ice and extended one leg to the knee over the hole to Margaret, who took hold of it. Margaret tried to pull herself out but pulled Patricia into the hole. Releasing her hold, Margaret held to the ice. Patricia climbed onto the ice, knelt close to the edge, got hold of Margaret’s hand, and pulled the upper part of her body over the edge. Margaret climbed out, and they ran 800 feet on the ice to a ladder and climbed to the top of the wall. 38241-3156
