Patrick Gerard Burns attempted to save a boy from being struck by a moving vehicle, Brooklyn, New York, May 31, 1986. The boy, 1, wandered away from his parents and walked onto a busy street. Burns, 25, seminarian, who was nearby, saw him and, as a car was approaching, immediately ran after him. Just before Burns could reach the boy, both were struck by the car. The boy required hospital treatment for multiple cuts and bruises. Burns was hospitalized for multiple abrasions and bruises and a compound fracture to his ankle, which required corrective surgery and subsequent therapy.
