Patrick J. Cyr saved Mark A. Hoglund, Jr., and Brittany R. Hoglund from drowning, Saco, Maine, May 28, 1994. Mark, 3, and his sister Brittany, 1, were in a van which entered the Saco River and sank in water about 17 feet deep. Cyr, 20, college student, who lived near the scene, was alerted to the situation. He immediately entered the river and swam out about 20 feet, to where he saw bubbles at the surface of the river. Cyr submerged, located the van, and felt around it for access, finding an open door on the passenger side. Cyr reached inside the van and grasped Mark’s leg, the pulled Mark from the van and surfaced with him. He took Mark back to the bank and handed him over to others, who attempted to revive him. Cyr returned to the van and , seeing Brittany in the rear, entered it fully and removed her. Surfacing, he took Brittany to the bank, where she was revived. The children were hospitalized; uninjured, Brittany was released later that day, but Mark was detained five months for treatment of the effects of his ordeal. 68747-7881
