Patrick J. Reidy, 36, yard conductor, saved Thomas Hayes, 6, from being run over by a train, Buffalo, New York, June 28, 1906. Thomas was on a railroad bridge and, too terrified to move, squatted on the track on which a train was approaching him at a speed of 35 m.p.h. Reidy, who was on a boxcar in the middle of a train going in the opposite direction and running 20 m.p.h., noticed Thomas and the oncoming train. He alighted on the ground at the end of the bridge. Without looking to note the position of the approaching train, Reidy ran between the rails toward Thomas, 55 feet distant. When Reidy was 10 feet from Thomas, the locomotive reached the bridge, and just as he grabbed the child and threw himself from the track, the locomotive rushed past at undiminished speed. Reidy alighted on the open framework of the bridge, where he lay and held Thomas until assistance reached him. Neither was injured. 6411-749
