Patrick O’Toole saved Linda C. Johntry from being struck by a train, Belmar, New Jersey, July 1, 1996. Ms. Johntry, 45, was in a motorized wheelchair that had become stuck on a railroad track, at a crossing, on which a train was approaching. A passing motorist, O’Toole, 47, retired delivery driver, saw the situation and immediately ran to her. As the train bore down on them, O’Toole grasped the wheelchair and attempted to dislodge it, then grasped Ms. Johntry and pulled her out of the wheelchair. They fell to the pavement, away from the track, just before the train, in emergency braking, passed them. The train struck the wheelchair, forcing it from the track to hit O’Toole in the leg, then stopped beyond the rescue point. O’Toole recovered from a bruise to his leg.
