Patrick Shawn Pixley saved Beatriz A. de Hernandez and helped to save Henry Hane from drowning, Coconut Grove, Florida, March 26, 1983. Henry, 1, Miss de Hernandez, 60, and Henry’s grandmother were trapped in a car that was submerging in 15 feet of murky water in a yacht basin. Pixley, 25, forklift operator, swam to the car and, submerging, entered through its broken-out windshield. Unable to locate its occupants, he surfaced, then submerged again as a man broke out the car’s rear window with a hammer. After the man removed Henry’s grandmother, Pixley removed Miss de Hernandez and Henry and surfaced with them. He swam to safety with Miss de Hernandez as another man took Henry to safety. All three victims recovered after hospital treatment.
