Patrick W. Mulligan saved Carmela Torbitone from being run over by a train, Norristown, Pennsylvania, August 19, 1914. Carmela, 2, ran toward a track on which a passenger train was approaching at a speed of 17 m.p.h., and Mulligan, 48, crossing watchman, started toward her from a point 35 feet distant when the locomotive was 70 feet from her. Mulligan reached Carmela when she was but 15 inches from the rail, and he leaned forward and grabbed her when the locomotive was about three feet from her. He was struck on the head, and he and Carmela were pushed aside by the train. Carmela’s left foot was so badly injured that it was amputated. Mulligan’s left knee and elbow were injured, and he was cut on the head. He was disabled sixty days. 13560-1052
