Paul A. Dudek, 33, railroad brakeman, saved Gail A. Olinger, 3, from being killed by a train, Kittanning, Pennsylvania, September 29, 1953. Gail wandered to a railroad crossing and stood midway the rails of a track on which a freight train was approaching at a speed of 28 m.p.h. Running 100 feet, Dudek reached the crossing when the train was 45 feet away; and he stepped over one rail and took hold of Gail. Lifting Gail, he pivoted from the track with her, barely clearing the path of the train, which passed at a reduced speed and stopped 100 feet beyond them. 42996-3906
