Paul H. Pardun died after helping to save Sheila E. Taylor from drowning, Rogersville, Tennessee, January 30, 1993. Ms. Taylor, 39, shouted for help as she was being carried downstream by the current of the Holston River. Traveling near the river, Pardun, 30, mechanic, saw her and approached the river bank. Removing his jacket and shoes, Pardun entered the water and waded and swam to Ms. Taylor. He grasped her and began to return to the bank with her as the current carried them downstream. When they were near the bank, arriving rescue personnel removed Ms. Taylor from the river. Pardun submerged and was carried farther downstream. His body was recovered from the river four weeks later.
