Paul H. Ralstin, 51, clergyman, rescued Lawrence E. Dohra, 23, truck dispatcher, from burning, Chicago, Illinois, February 22, 1946. An automobile in which Dohra was riding crashed into a safety zone abutment and burst into flames around the gasoline tank. Two companions on the front seat were thrown clear of the automobile. Dohra, who was rendered unconscious, sat on the rear seat; while flames spread from the back of the automobile toward him, and gasoline burned under it. Although warned that the tank might explode, Ralstin walked to a rear door, which was wide open. For three feet he walked through flames rising about two inches above the roadway. He stepped through the doorway; and taking hold of Dohra’s wrist, he pulled him to the floor. Then taking hold of Dohra under his armpits, Ralstin dragged him from the automobile. Flames filled the interior of the automobile 30 seconds later. Neither Ralstin nor Dohra was burned. Dohra died 15 minutes after the accident of injuries. Ralstin tore a tendon of the muscle of his right arm loose from the shoulder in aiding Dohra, weakening his arm permanently. 40875-3492
