Paul J. McGrain died attempting to save Joseph Vecosta from being killed by a train, Grove City, Pennsylvania, October 5, 1923. As a freight train approached on a track on which Vecosta, 34, was working, he stepped from the track onto another one, where he stood unaware that a passenger train was approaching behind him and running at a speed of 45 m.p.h. McGrain, 22, laborer, and several other men called out warnings to Vecosta without effect, and when the train was within 320 feet of Vecosta, moving at only a slightly diminished speed, McGrain started to run alongside the track ahead of the train toward Vecosta. When he got opposite Vecosta, after running 90 feet, McGrain turned toward Vecosta and got on the track. He and Vecosta were struck by the locomotive, and both were instantly killed. 23816-1862
