Paul L. Spackeen, 30, farmhand, sustained fatal injuries attempting to save S. Katherine Curtis, 53, from being killed by a train, Servia, Indiana, December 28, 1922. As Mrs. Curtis started to cross a track, covered with ice, on which a train was running at a speed of 60 m.p.h., she stumbled and fell between the rails. After a girl had grasped her hand in an effort to aid her but had jumped away from the track in fright as the train got near, Spackeen walked quickly to Mrs. Curtis, stooped, put his arms around her at the shoulders, and pulled her partly off the track. The locomotive then struck Mrs. Curtis and Spackeen. Mrs. Curtis was killed, and Spackeen died as a result of his injuries nine hours later. 22989-1882
