Paul Wayne DuPerre saved Hiram D. Burke from drowning, North Windham, Maine, May 28, 1983. Hiram, 5, fell into the cold, turbulent water of a power plant’s discharge channel just upstream from the Presumpscot River. Despite being a poor swimmer, DuPerre, 30, meter reader and installer, jumped into the channel and grabbed Hiram as they were swept downstream in the 15-foot-deep water. DuPerre was able to secure footing on a submerged boulder not far from the channel’s bank, and both he and Hiram were lifted to safety by others.
