Paula Ann Wrobel saved W. Bartholomew Mahon from drowning, Shawanese, Pennsylvania, September 3, 1959. Bartholomew, 8, a very poor swimmer, fell from an inner tube on which he was floating 30 feet from shore in Harveys Lake and, after being submerged briefly in water six feet deep, called for help. His efforts to stay afloat drove the inner tube away from him, and it drifted farther from shore. From barely wadable water Paula, 12, schoolgirl, swam 15 feet to Bartholomew and, fearing a struggle as he continued to flounder, got behind him. As she obtained a chin-hold, Bartholomew’s flailing arm struck her a sharp blow in the eye. Paula then turned Bartholomew onto his back and towed him 15 feet to where her mother, who could not swim, had waded. The mother took Bartholomew and waded to shore with him as Paula followed. 44939-4382
