Pearl W. Colquitt, 66, hotel owner, rescued Leota Scott, 45, from burning, Cuthbert, Georgia, August 21, 1958. At night while Miss Scott was alone in the lobby of a small hotel she fell asleep, and the cigarette she had been smoking ignited her dress. Miss Scott ran screaming to the door of Mrs. Colquitt’s room at one end of the lobby as draft from a fan caused her clothing to burn more intensely. Mrs. Colquitt was awakened by the screams and, clad only in a nightgown, opened the door of her room. Miss Scott’s dress then nearly was consumed, and her underclothing was aflame. Pulling Miss Scott into the room, Mrs. Colquitt with her hands quickly tore all of the burning clothes from Miss Scott’s body and threw these on the floor. She then smothered the flames on the clothing with a towel. Miss Scott suffered extensive burns, which required skin grafting. She was hospitalized for five months and then returned home to recuperate. Mrs. Colquitt sustained burns on both hands which healed
