Perry I. Oliver, 23, weighmaster, died attempting to save Hazel Mann, 18, from drowning, New Haven, Illinois, August 8, 1922. Miss Mann was being supported at the surface by a young man who was teaching her to swim as he waded in the Wabash River, and he stepped into deep water about 150 feet from the bank. He continued to support her but was unable to swim with her and called for help. Oliver, who was not very strong, swam 225 feet to her and took hold of her, but he was unable to progress as he attempted to swim and became distressed. Two other men swam to them, and one of them swam with Miss Mann to a boat which was brought from the bank. Oliver sank before the boat could be taken to him and was drowned. 22802-1857
