Peter Dean, 25, deckhand, died helping to save Mrs. W. W. McCune, 28, and W. W. McCune, Jr., 6, from drowning, San Bernardino County, California, July 11, 1907. The woman and boy fell from a disabled steamer into the Colorado River at flood stage. Dean and another man threw a plank into the water, jumped in, and swam with it to them. The current was too strong to allow them to get to shore, and, as the plank would not sustain the four, Dean, after going a quarter-mile, left the plank but failed to reach shore. 1855-231
