Peter Frank Giltrow attempted to save D. Gordon Alley from drowning, Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia, January 31, 1971. While fishing from a bank of Trout Lake, Alley, 23, stepped into the water, lost his footing, and was carried into a deep area by current from a nearby stream emptying into the lake. Alley’s wading boot filled with water and prevented him from swimming. Giltrow, 23, graduate student, removed most of his attire and entered the cold water. He swam 75 feet and obtained a hold on Alley, who then sank. Giltrow lost his hold on him. After trying several times to regain his hold, Giltrow was so cold he could hardly move. He called for help. Another fisherman saved Giltrow; but Alley drowned.
