Peter M. Varga rescued Mark E. Suwienski from burning, Brooklyn, Michigan, July 17, 1982. Mark, 17, was unconscious in the driver’s seat of an automobile that had begun to burn after an accident. Despite intense heat and flames that were filling the car’s interior, Varga, 21, store clerk, entered the passenger side twice before locating Mark. He then climbed completely into the car, which was filled with smoke, grasped Mark, and pulled him out moments before the car was complexly engulfed in flames. Mark was hospitalized for two months with second- and third-degree burns and other injuries; he recovered. Varga recovered from lesser burns on his hands.
