Philip A. Cochran, 17, laborer, sustained fatal injuries saving Cecil R. Coldwell, 2, and attempting to save Hazel I., 6, and C. Morris Coldwell, 4, from burning, Codyville Plantation, Maine, July 18, 1921. Cecil, Hazel, and Morris, with three other children, were on the second story of their home, a small frame house, when it caught fire. Cochran discovered the fire upon entering the house, and a young woman in the house escaped with three of the children. The fire had started near the stairway and spread rapidly. After the young woman left the house, Cochran went upstairs and dropped Cecil out of a second-story window to her. A short time later Cochran staggered out of the house, terribly burned, having failed to find Hazel and Morris. Cochran died seven hours later. Hazel and Morris were burned to death, and Cecil was severely burned but recovered. 21716-1863
