Philip D. Joughin, 35, miner, assisted in an attempt to save Dennis Lynch, 53, repairman; Stephen Hogan, 57, pumpman, and Michael L. Belangie, 33, miner, from suffocation, Butte, Montana, January 14, 1911. Joughin was one of a party of four men, among whom was Belangie, who descended to the pump station on the 1,000-foot level in search of Lynch and Hogan, who had been overcome by smoke from a fire in the mine. Belangie made another trip along with three others, but he was overcome. His companions went on and rescued Lynch and Hogan. A short time afterwards Joughin and three other men descended again to the station, located Belangie, and took him to the surface. When gotten out, about 10 minutes after the rescue of Lynch and Hogan, Belangie was dead. Lynch and Hogan were revived. 6654-532
