Philip Daniel Haaland saved Harvey C. Fox and Victoria J. Holton from burning, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, September 10, 1970. The automobile in which Fox, 18, student, and Miss Holten, 18, were riding left the highway, rolled over several times, and came to rest upside down. The fuel tank was ruptured, and fire broke out at the rear. Haaland, 42, clothing salesman, ran to the automobile and, lying on the ground, pulled Fox through the window opening. After dragging Fox away, Haaland went back to the vehicle, on which the flames were spreading. On his stomach, he crawled into the inverted automobile as far as his waist in order to reach Miss Holton, who was unconscious. Haaland drew Miss Holten with him as he backed out of the automobile. A few seconds later there was a muffled explosion, and flames filled the interior of the automobile.
