Philip E. Gilliam died attempting to save August F. Balling from drowning, Baltimore, Maryland, February 21, 1925. August, 12, schoolboy, broke through the ice on Lake Roland at a point 50 feet from the bank. Philip, 17, printer’s apprentice, ran on the ice from the bank and broke through as he was reaching to take hold of August. He caught hold of August and supported him. August held one end of a belt, and Philip flung the other end toward a boy who came to the hole. The boy broke through the ice, and Philip continued to support August, who was frantic, while the other boy scrambled upon the ice and again extended his hand toward August. He broke through the second time but crawled upon the ice and went to the bank. A minute or two later August and Philip sank together. Both were drowned. 25219-2170
