Philip W. Simmons, 14, schoolboy, saved Roland G. Williamson, 11, from drowning, East Seattle, Washington, July 15, 1920. Following an explosion and fire on a launch on which Roland, Philip, and an elderly man were riding on Lake Washington, Philip and the man jumped from the launch into the water. The launch continued running about 50 feet and was about 1,200 feet from shore. Although he was severely burned, Philip swam to the launch and took Roland, who had called for help and was holding to the rudder, away from the Iaunch, fearing another explosion. Being hampered by overalls which he wore, he removed them with some difficulty and swam 125 feet with Roland and supported him 15 to 20 minutes until they were rescued by men in a motorboat. Philip was disabled more than a month because of his burns. 21168-1823
