Pierre Barrette, who saved Francis R. Cournoyer from drowning, Sherbrooke, Quebec, April 12, 1984. Francis, 4, fell from a wall into the near-freezing water of the Magog River. Barrette, 39, unemployed firefighter, saw Francis, who was submerged and unconscious about 25 feet from the bank. Barrette jumped fully clothed into the river and swam to him, having to stroke with only one arm since the other was immobilized in a splint. At Francis, Barrette established a hold on him, then, using his disabled arm, returned to the bank. Barrette’s bulky clothing hampered his progress. On the bank, Barrette revived Francis, who was hospitalized overnight. Barrette was nearly exhausted. Both recovered. 60458-6988
