Pierre Paquette rescued Pierre Lajeunesse from burning, Montcerf, Quebec, February 6, 1989. Fire broke out in the basement of the Lajeunesse residence, burning Pierre, 11, and rendering him unconscious. A neighbor, Paquette, 20, was alerted and went to the scene. He forced open a door to the basement, then, despite growing flames, intense heat, and dense smoke, which precluded visibility, crawled into the basement twice before locating Pierre, who lay on the floor. He seized Pierre and dragged him outside. Pierre required extensive hospitalization for third-degree burns.
