Pinckney C. Cochran, 25, carpenter, died attempting to save Eugene Canup, 15, from drowning, McCaysville, Georgia, July 14, 1923. As Eugene was wading in the Ocoee River, she suddenly stepped into deep water and was carried by a current 20 feet from the bank. Cochran, who was dressed and who had a broken arm that was in splints, waded 10 feet from the bank, plunged to Eugene, and took hold of her. She threw both arms around his neck, and they sank. Upon rising with Eugene still holding to him, Cochran swam eight feet toward the bank, but he was then pulled under water and carried farther from the bank. He and Eugene were drowned. 23839-1928
