Polk Holcomb, 41, farmer, saved Cleveland East, 25, laborer, from suffocation, Carters, Georgia, August 11, 1914. East was overcome on the bottom of a 35-foot well in which dynamite had been fired, and none of the six men who gathered about the well would descend for him. Holcomb came to the well, tied a strong rope around his waist, and descended a ladder to the bottom, taking another rope to tie to East. But he decided, upon reaching East, that the other rope was unsafe for East because of his weight, and he took the strong rope off himself and tied it to East. He tied the weaker rope around his own waist. He then ascended the ladder, and East was drawn from the well and revived. Holcomb suffered with headache the rest of the day. 15873-1326
