Preston S. Cowan, 49, restaurant proprietor, attempted to save C. Hubert, 2, and F. Myrtle Ragan, 39, and Mamie B. Corbin, 35, respectively, from a runaway, Tullahoma, Tennessee, September 15, 1915. A team of horses hitched to a wagon ran away toward an approaching buggy containing Hubert, Mrs. Ragan, and Mrs. Corbin. Cowan, seeing there was danger of a collision, ran from the sidewalk in front of the pony hitched to the buggy and around to the side of the buggy. Mrs. Ragan jumped from the buggy with Hubert before Cowan could reach them, but he pushed Mrs. Corbin as she was rising to get out of the buggy, and she fell out. One of the horses struck Cowan and hurled him 15 feet, knocking him unconscious. Cowan sustained several broken bones, his head and body were cut and bruised in several places, and his right eardrum was ruptured. Hubert and Mrs. Ragan were not injured. Mrs. Corbin was scratched and bruised but recovered. 15491-1478
