Quincy H. Wylie died attempting to save Edwin R. Wilkinson from drowning, East Dubuque, Illinois, January 13, 1914. Wilkinson, 19, rivet heater, fell into an air hole while skating on the Mississippi River at night, into water more than six feet deep. Quincy, 16, clerk, skated to the hole from a point of safety, leaned forward over the edge of the ice, and threw one end of his coat toward Wilkinson. The ice broke under Quincy, and he fell into the water and was drowned. Wilkinson was saved by others. 12440-1114
