Quinton Blevins, 47, watchmaker, rescued James I. Painter, 27, electrical contractor, from burning, Chattanooga, Tennessee, November 5, 1967. Painter’s station wagon struck a utility pole and turned over on its side on the highway, where it burst into flames. Blevins ran to near the burning vehicle, from which flames rose 15 to 20 feet. He saw Painter, his clothing afire, struggling to climb out through the broken windshield. Blevins ran to the station wagon, passing through scattered flames burning on the highway and rising about four feet from the pavement. Heat was intense. Grasping Painter by the arm, Blevins pulled him through the windshield opening and dragged him clear of the flames on the highway. Painter was removed to a hospital but succumbed to his burns. Blevins suffered burns to his face and arms, which healed. 50098-5452
