R. Delane Tabor helped to save Andrew J. Hamilton and Reuben A. Brown from a mine cave-in, Brazil, Indiana, December 3, 1923. Hamilton, 35, clay miner, was caught under a fall of shale in a cross cut in a clay mine. Brown, 50, mine driver, who was 14 feet away, hurried to him but was unable to lift a large slab of shale that rested on his back. Three other miners were attracted, and as Brown and two of them attempted to lift the slab off Hamilton, a second fall occurred. Brown was struck and held fast against the wall, and one of the other miners was instantly killed. Tabor, 43, clay miner, reached the cross cut after the second fall had occurred. Although bits of shale continued to drop, he and other miners freed Hamilton, and they made a futile effort to lift the slab off Brown unaided. With two other miners, Tabor then was about to take hold of the slab again when the chunk fell, causing them to jump back. Tabor later helped two of the miners move the slab, freeing Brown. Hamilton sustained a broken arm and cuts and bruises. Brown was severely lacerated and bruised and was disabled five weeks. 24635-1899
