R. Richard Roy saved Owen E. Lieber and Nancy E. Letourneau from drowning, Old Orchard Beach, Maine, June 8, 1969. Lieber and Miss Letourneau, each 19, along with the latter’s younger sister, got into difficulty in surf in the Atlantic Ocean when they were unable to swim back to the beach because of a strong seaward current. While others were aiding the sister, Ray, 23, draftsman, swam to Lieber in deep water about 100 feet from shore. After towing Lieber to near wadable water, from where he made it to the beach with other aid, Roy swam to Miss Letourneau, who was about 150 feet from shore. Unable to tow her against the current, Roy pushed her to wadable water. By then he was tired. A man aided Roy in taking Miss Letourneau the rest of the way to shore.
