R. Steve Shelhorn helped to rescue William J. St. John and William H. Ellis, Jr., from burning, Orlando, Florida, December 10, 1976. In a highway accident, fire broke out at the rear of a sedan containing St. John, 22, and Ellis, 20. As the flames spread inside the vehicle, Shelhorn, 32, wrecker owner, and two other men ran to the sedan but could not open the driver’s door. They ran to the passenger side, which was parallel to the highway guardrail. One man opened the passenger door, but the guardrail limited the opening to about a foot. In intense heat, Shelhorn and the other men with difficulty removed St. John and then Ellis from the sedan, which shortly was totally afire. St. John and Ellis required extensive hospitalization. 55697-6312
