R. Ted Woodruff died attempting to save Patrick J. Whalen from being killed by a train, Peoria Heights, Illinois May 22, 1940. Patrick, 2, walked between the rails of a track on which a passenger train was approaching in a northerly direction. Woodruff, 40, laborer, ran 125 feet southwest and along the track southward to Patrick, reaching him when the locomotive was 10 feet from them and was moving at a reduced speed of 23 m.p.h. From a point just east of the east rail Woodruff reached over it, grasped Patrick, and lifted him; but the locomotive struck them; and they were killed. 38379-3180
