R. Vernon Callaway, 13, schoolboy, saved Roland J. Cyr, 12, from drowning, St. Joe, Idaho, January 10, 1918. Roland broke through the ice while skating on a flooded lowland, where the water was four feet deep. Roland swam to keep afloat, and another boy made an unsuccessful attempt to draw him out. Vernon arrived and lay on the ice, giving his hands to the boy and allowing Roland to grasp his foot. The boy pulled, but the ice broke under Roland and partly under Vernon. The boy continued to pull Vernon, but the ice broke again and again as Roland tried to climb on it. The third time it broke, Vernon dropped into the hole and stood in water to his shoulders. The other boy went for help, and Vernon made several futile efforts to lift Roland upon the ice, which broke each time. Roland became unconscious and was supported by Vernon, who was just losing consciousness when some men in boats reached them after they had been in the water more than an hour. Vernon’s sleeve had frozen to the ice. Vernon was disabled for three weeks from exposure, and Roland, whose heart was weak, died from the exposure. 18732-1614
